Club Meeting 19 June 2012

It was a night full of achievements! We had an Ice Breaker speech, an Inspiring speech, a member who presented his first Friendship speech and we also had an Advance manual speech.

Toastmaster of the Evening (TME) Sylvia started the meeting on time, greeting our guests and members.

We began with the New Members Induction Ceremony conducted by Vice President of Membership Alexandra. Wai Lik and Ean were inducted, and all Friendship members pledged to help and support them in their Toastmasters journey.

It was a record breaking night for Table Topics. Table Topic Master Ian had 8 volunteers, with 3 speakers who were trying out Table Topics for the first time. Farhana told us about inner beauty while Lien Chai explained the origin of his name. Ricky was also keen to improve on his impromptu speaking skills.

Then it was time for Ean’s Ice Breaker speech. She had a dramatic start to her story, running away from home at age 7. Although she had no idea how to get to her grandmother’s house, she continued walking alone on the highway for 20 minutes. Fortunately, a young couple stopped to give her a lift and sent her home. Cherishing a dream to be a writer, she took up journalism. She believes that with determination, we can achieve our dreams. Her parting message was to, “Live life in the present, and live a meaningful life, every day.”

It was Wai Lik’s first speech as a Friendship member. He recounted the harrowing tale of “Crafting a speech at the last minute is such a torture!” It was a blow by blow account of how he came up with his project speech, and it was indeed an experience he did not wish to repeat. He vowed that he will never again prepare at the last minute!

Next, Daphne told us about the GPS in her life. Being clueless about direction and navigation, her first GPS was a savior to her driving problems. She found her next GPS when she joined Friendship Club last year. Determined to succeed as a Business Analyst, she decided to join Toastmasters to improve in her communications skills. With many Friendship members guiding her, she knew she had made the right decision. Recounting the tale of an eagle who thought it was a prairie chicken and could not fly, she told us, “Don’t listen to the prairie chicken who told the eagle it could not fly. Listen to your heart”

Our next speech was a speech from the Special Occasions manual. It was an entertaining, interesting and fascinating speech, with Timothy at his creative best. Being the best man for Alexandra and Ian’s (fictional) wedding, he pulled out all the stops to deliver a toast to the happy couple, filled with childhood stories, dreams and achievements.

Timothy wins the Best Project Speaker award
