President’s Message (September 2014)

I hadn’t been cycling for the past few years and I almost forgot how to manoeuvre a bike. My sincere thanks to our Vice President of Membership, Edrea who organized ‘The Cycling Day’ on last Tuesday, which refreshed my motor memory. We enjoyed the cycling experience very much and we were enticed by the beauty of Taman Pertanian Bukit Cahaya, Shah Alam. I was also touched by the kindness of our fellow members who helped one another when one of our bikes was having technical problem.

In fact, there were other modes of transportation in Taman Pertanian. Why cycling? Cycling is just good enough to keep us moving and at the same time let us embrace the fascinating nature in Taman Pertanian. We were also traveling in a perfectly eco-friendly manner. The joy of successfully getting to the top of a slope is also indescribable. The excitement of racing down a slope is unimaginable if you have never experienced it. For those who have missed this experience, I can assure you that you will be loving your beating heart, your gasping lungs and your overheated muscles if you were there.

Life is like a cycling journey. Ups and downs in life are unavoidable, just like the bumpy and sloppy road that we encounter in our cycling journey. Every challenge along the road has made us better cyclists. The potholes, wet tarmac and steep slope are like the obstacles in life; we need to overcome them in order to reach our destination. Similarly, in our Toastmasters’ journey, we may halt when we see the challenging slope or when we reach the first peak. How can we advance and reach our targeted destination?

Recently, I had a chat with one member from IBM Toastmasters Club. He felt that his progress is stagnant in Toastmasters’ learning journey. He didn’t see his improvement in this self-development programme. In our conversation, I found out that he has been playing Ah-Counter or Timer role repeatedly in every club meeting. He hasn’t deliver his project speech for months. As a club officer, he arranges speaking slots for his club members, but not for himself. My suggestion to him is to deliver project speeches in our club and try out some other meeting roles to learn different skills.

A straight and easy road will not make us good cyclists. Step out of our comfort zone is the key for our continuous improvement. Fellow members, if you are about to reach the stagnant point, try something new, Toastmasters has a lot to offer! Talk to any of our club officers. Please don’t limit yourself on the smooth road, let’s keep pedaling on the curvy and jerky journey of self-development!

Speechcraft Program on 16 & 17 Apr 2011

Report by Angeline Lee, VPE cum Area W3 Governor

Angeline Lee

Speechcraft Program

Thanks to the hard work and committed effort of President Zaiton and VPPR Alexandra, Friendship Toastmasters Club successfully conducted its Speechcraft program on 16 and 17 April 2011.

Day 1 – 16 April 2011

We were at THIT, a cosy training centre located at Subang Square by 8.30 AM to set up the room and registration desk.

From left: Andy, Daphne, Susan & Grace at the registration desk

While waiting for all the participants to arrive, Organizing Chair Zaiton decided to reshuffle the morning agenda. We had our tea break of nasi lemak before TME Grace Tan kick-start the Speechcraft session.

With her trademark high energy, enthusiasm and spontaneity, it was a great start to a fun-filled, educational session. We had the opportunity to learn from 4 speakers.

Daniel Teh conducting the "Ice-Breaker" session

Daniel Teh (AFC Toastmasters Club) recommended using words to capture attention. Keep the sentences short with the speaking rate of not more than 140 words per minute to allow time for the audience to digest and think what we have just said.

Grace Tan conducting the "Introducing A Speaker" session

Using the Grace’s IOI (Impressive, Outstanding and Impactful) method, we will be able to introduce a speaker with flair. She also suggested walking to the emcee with energy after being introduced.

VPPR Alexandra conducting the session "Speak With Conviction."

Alexandra’s ingenious idea of asking our participants to explain why they should be given $1 million was the perfect assignment to learn how to speak with conviction.

President Zaiton presenting "From Hello To Goodbye"

Zaiton’s presented a beautiful analogy of speakers as sellers of ideas. To sell our ideas effectively, we must first identify the purpose of our speech. This will then determine the organization of our speech.

Evon, one of the participants, presenting her speech

Putting into practice what they have just been taught, participants presented a short 3 minutes speech to introduce themselves followed by the second assignment to introduce a speaker.

Day 2 – 17 April 2011

Susan (left) helping out with registration and video recording duties.
Daphne (right) helping out with registration and timer duties.

VPM Chee Hoe shares his experiences with the participants on 17 April.

The second day of the Speechcraft started off with an energetic presentation by Hilson Yeap (AFC Toastmasters Club) on 'Show What You Mean'. He showed us how to master the effective body language during speech delivery. According to Hilson, body language together with our verbal words will help us to express, clarify, enhance and dramatize our message. It will also grab the audience’s interest and attention to focus on the speaker.

Chief facilitator Daniel Teh

Next, Daniel enlightened the participants on useful tips for 'Vocal Variety' and 'Work With Words'. Daniel also had an interactive session with the participants in the Effective ECS Presentation segment. He showed us how to keep the presentation short and sweet.

Lunch break

Instead of falling asleep after lunch, our participants were working on their assignment enthusiastically. They believed that the best way to improve is by practicing and doing the exercises provided. Their assignment presentation was evaluated by Grace and other facilitators. The constructive evaluation given by Grace was very helpful for them to hone their strengths and overcome their weaknesses.

Participants enjoying the games session

The speechcraft program was then uplifted by a fun and meaningful game session of "What's my name?" Every participant had a name tag on his/her back and he/she had to ask questions to find out "What's my name?" Some questions were prohibited, for instance, "Who am I?", "What's my name?" and "Who are my family members?" The aim of this game session was to demonstrate the art of asking questions. As we all know, we can't avoid asking question in any form of communication.

As the emcee, I learned how to coordinate with the facilitators of different sessions. The emcee is responsible for the energy level of the audience. It was a golden learning opportunity to work with and learn from experienced speakers such as Daniel Teh, Hilson Yeap and Grace Tan.

This was Daphne’s first time joining a Speechcraft program. She shares her thoughts with us:

It is indeed a pleasure to have the opportunity to help out and at the same time observe a Speechcraft program. I find it fantastic and very inspiring. I love the distinguished and marvelous speakers, the training environment and the people who I have met. I will soon use the skills learned in my project speeches.

Angeline Lee

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

With the confirmation of quorum required for our once a year Annual General Meeting (AGM), President Zaiton started our meeting.

President Zaiton conducting the AGM

The Club Officer for term 2010/2011 presented their respective reports.

President’s report was presented by Zaiton Zainal Abidin
Vice President of Education’s report was presented by Angeline Lee
Vice President of Membership’s report was presented by Chor Chee Hoe
Vice President of Public Relations’ report was presented by Alexandra Lau
Secretary’s report was presented by Acting Secretary Angeline Lee
Treasurer’s report was presented by Chor Wai Yee
Sergeant At Arms’ report was presented by Sivadas

The reports were adopted with minor amendments in the Treasurer's report as proposed by PP Teresa Choong, one of the club auditors.

The next item in the agenda was the Club Officers’ election. With the successful conclusion of this election, Friendship is pleased to announce that the Club Officers for term 2011/2012 are

President – Angeline Lee
Vice President Education – Chor Chee Hoe
Vice President Membership – Alexandra Lau
Vice President Public Relations – Susan Lim
Secretary – Daphne Au
Treasurer – Ian Tai
Sergeant At Arms – Andy Supramaniam

The Club Officers for 2011/2012

After a short break, we then moved on to the Project Speech Session. In her “From Good to Great” speech, Past President Lay Theng recalled Division W Governor 2009/2010 DTM Soh Fong Wai’s analogy for a Toastmasters leadership journey. He said, “When you join the club, it is like learning how to swim in a safe and small swimming pool, and you swim with the friends from your club whom you are familiar with. When you become the Area Governor, you go to the public swimming pool of Olympic size and you will face different challenges. This is the training ground for you to prepare yourself, so that you can one day go to the ocean.”

She also recounted a thought-provoking idea that she learnt from Jim Collin, the author of the book “Good To Great”. Jim Collin said, "Good is the enemy of Great. We don’t have great schools, principally because we have good schools. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life.” Lay Theng then asked us whether we wanted to be good or great. We agreed with her whole-heartedly that being great is better than being good.

As the second speaker, I presented my “A Brief History of Time” speech for the Speaking To Inform manual. I shared about my Lee family blog and demonstrated the few simple steps required to create a blog and to do the first posting. To my surprise, at the end of the meeting, Teresa and Lay Theng both informed me they were also interested in starting up their own blog.

Phileo, performing Timer duties for the first time, reported that we were on time for most of the items in the program agenda.

Phileo giving his Timer report

At the end of the evening, the following awards were presented:
Competent Leader (CL) award for President Zaiton
Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB) award for President Zaiton
District 51 Best Area/Division Website award won by Area W3 and announced during the Penang Convention. Area W3 webmaster is VPM Chee Hoe

Past President Freddie has nothing but praise for our President, who has single-handedly contributed 2 DCP points for our club.

President Zaiton deserves heaps of praise for her strings of achievements during her tenure. The term is filled with many events which she led persistently from the drawing board to fruition. Check out all these memorable events in our blog and Facebook.

President Zaiton, your dynamism has certainly taken Friendship to a higher level of success. Congratulations and a big THANK YOU for your outstanding leadership!

There was laughter from the audience as he related his “uncle” story in his “Like Fine Wine” speech. There were more laughter as he told us in his impromptu “If I could travel back in time” speech that he would not have spent all his money on girls, parties and booze and instead listen to his mother’s advice to invest in property.

Joining Freddie at our Area Contests were Friendship members Area W3 Governor Angeline, VPPR Alexandra, Past President Lay Theng, Grace, Susan, Daphne and Sivadas.

Friendship members flanking Freddie are Alexandra, Lay Theng, Andy, Grace & Angeline

Friendship & Exact ADC Joint Meeting

Report by Angeline Lee, VPE, cum Area W3 Governor

Joint Meeting on 30.11.10

A question was asked 4 months ago, by Exact ADC Toastmasters Club to Friendship Toastmasters Club, “Shall we have a joint meeting?” Friendship members, being friendly people as our name implied, did not hesitate to reply, “Sure, why not?” This question lead to our two clubs meeting at G Tower on 30 November 2010, resulting in an evening of Infinite Possibilities.

Our newest member for Friendship leverage (Word of the Day) on the opportunity to do his Ice Breaker speech. Not only that, he had also taken to heart his Toastmasters pledge to bring guests to club meetings. Ian brought not just one, but two guests to this meeting, Scott and Jim.

Ian delivering his well prepared Ice Breaker speech

For the Table Topics session, Caroline, first-timer at the Table Topics Master role, gave us some interesting questions. Brenda explored the possibility of being Rachel Green, with Ross at her feet, adoring her with his puppy eyes, in the TV series “Friends”. Ian spoke of being David Beckham, while Susan was happy to talk about money growing on trees. Freddie took flight in his “If I could fly” impromptu speech. Our two guests, Scott and Jim, also leverage on the opportunity to do table topics and spoke of having super powers and travelling back in time.

In the prepared speech session, Brenda has us laughing at her tale of half an hour of joy as she peeked at a cute guy and he looked back. Not only did she entertain us with her tale of a schoolgirl crush, her message for us was to continue learning from birth to the day that we breathe our last.

Enjoying Brenda's speech !

Freddie took us to an alternate world where “If money is not a problem”, we would be paying our happy taxi drivers RM100 and asking them to keep the change. Andrew in his “Lazy Runner Does Penang” expounded on the pleasures of food and why he has to punish himself by running, after eating too much.

Our GE for this Infinite Possibilities meeting between Friendship and the equally friendly members of Exact ADC was Lee Wei Seong, Club Mentor Chair for Division W 2009/2010. He was eloquent in his sharing of his evaluation, and his wealth of experience enriched our evening.

His team of evaluators comprising of Soo Loon, Michelle of KPMG, Yuen Kai and Kim provided constructive feedback to our four project speakers. Kim was particularly impressive with her analogy of choppy Astro transmission during a rainy day and praising the speaker’s perseverance in delivering the project speech.

Grammarian Lay Theng, Ah Counter Ai Shiang and Timer Sivadas illuminated us on the good usage of language, the verbal crutches in our speeches and the areas of improvement for time management.

Right after the evaluation session, Wei Seong shared with us regarding mentoring. In his opinion, all of us are qualified to be mentors, as long as our heart is in it and we have some knowledge of the Toastmasters communication and leadership track. He stressed the importance of asking the mentees to select their mentors. After that, the mentors need to know their mentees’ aspirations and help to guide them in achieving their goals. Mentors, do not have doubt whether you are doing a good job, just do the best that you can as mentoring is not about teaching, it is about sharing.

Wei Seong receiving our token of appreciation

There were a number of awards presented to the talented club members of Area W3 on this fine evening of learning and enjoyment. The awards presented were

Best Table Topics Speaker – Freddie Yap
Best Project Speaker – Ian Tai
Best Speech Evaluator – Kim Chow

Ian is our Best Project Speaker. Well done, Ian !

The undisputed Best Speech Evaluator - Kim Chow

Tan Lay Theng, Area Governor 2009/2010 presented the following awards to the deserving recipients.

District 51 Distinguished Club 2009/2010 – Yeow Yuen Kai
Division W Toastmaster of the Year for Exact ADC – Lai Chee Yoong

Distinguished Club Award for Exact

Lay Theng also received District 51 President’s Distinguished Area award, a testimony of her commitment to serve diligently, dedication to excel in her Area Governor duties and a shining example of a selfless Toastmaster.

Last but not least, here is our group photo to commemorate our evening of laughter, learning and sharing. Thank you, Exact ADC, for being our marvelous host for this enjoyable joint meeting!

Breakfree & Breakaway Program in Malacca

Report by Freddie Yap, Past President

FTMC BREAKFREE & BREAKAWAY PROGRAM
13-14 Nov 2010 (reported by PP Freddie Yap)

On the morning of Nov 13, 2010 a luxury coach waited patiently by the side of Suria KLCC. It was there to ferry the group of Friendship Toastmasters Club (FTMC) members to the historical city of Malacca. The mission – to “breakfree & breakaway” from the normal club setting and more importantly, TO HAVE FUN. Lots and lots of fun, great fellowship and to meet members of the Malacca Toastmasters Club (MTC)

We started our journey at 10.45am and reached the quaint town shortly after 1pm. The age old charming facade of Hotel Puri simply belies it vast compound inside. You would never imagine what looked like nothing more than a refurbished intermediate shoplot could turn out to be a sanctuary of sorts inside. “Heaven on Earth” ... that was how PP KC Lim described it.

After checking in, we could hear our empty stomach howling for attention. Yes, it was just the right time for a sumptuous Chicken Rice Balls treat. But hold it, you have to join a long long queue and it was a big challenge under the hot sun. Those who refused to succumb to the torturing wait opted for hotel fare instead. We had char-kway-teow and fried rice in the cooling courtyard nestled among some refreshing foliage inside the hotel compound. It was such a nice feeling indeed.

Once our stomachs were tamed, we headed for our first activity of the day- the guided boat ride. This boat ride initially appeared to be no different from any other. But lo and behold, our tour guide turned out to a be a macho man in his fifties who knows the place like the back of his hand. With a well-toned physique and a weather-beaten face, they simply tell you that he is a man who has seen-it-all. To the ladies, it was his manly voice and his unique brand of humour that kept them glued to him. To the men, it was his storytelling abilities and his uncanny ability to translate the word Goodbye in almost all the languages in the world, that left us in awe. To me, he was simply world-class!

After the tour, we found ourselves more endeared to this amazing historical city than ever before. It was actually a history lesson to many of us. With clearly satisfied faces, we strolled back to our cozy hotel rooms for refreshment. When the clock ticked 6pm, most of us were already at the Puri Restaurant busy preparing for a fun-filled nite. By 6.30 we were seen mingling with our guests from MTC. As in our usual FTMC spirit, there were no strangers among us. We had a superlicious buffet dinner Peranakan- styled and of course, we had the must-have ayam-poteng.

With members of MTC still streaming in, we then heard our TME cum CEO (Chief Everything Officer) Grace Tan taking to the floor. After our President’s welcome speech, the TME got everyone singing to the FTMC song “The Eagles”. Table Topics Master PP Teresa Choong got everyone on their toes with ten adrenalin-pumping Table Topics. There were a total of eleven Toastmasters from MTC so there was no problem getting volunteers for Table Topics this time round. The best Table Topic speaker award was won by Ahmad of MTC. Congrats Ahmad, you certainly spoke well on the given topic.

For the record, members present were:
MTC
IPP Joshua
President Melvin
VPE Sharon
VPPR Clarence
VPM – Lena
William
Ahmad
Shima
PP Jennifer
PP Guat Mui
Azizah (also DIV A Governor)

FTMC
President Zaiton
PP Tan Lay Theng
PP KC Lim & his family and friends
PP James & Co
PP Freddie Yap
PP Teresa Choong
PP Tony Lim
VPPR Alexandra Lau & sister Kate Lau
Grace Tan

For the Toastmasters Got Talent session, the following members gave their best-ever performance which could have given Simon Cowell a run for his money. It was anytime better than Britain’s Got Talent!

PP James the crooner sang his hearts out with his soulful redition of ‘Le Bisikile De Belsize’
PP KC Lim demonstrated his martial art prowess learned from his Shaolin sojourn
PP Lay Theng shared with us deep thoughts about her journey as a Toastmaster
PP Tony Lim brought the house down with his well- executed punchlines
PP James and family dazzled us with their captivating Indian dance
CEO Grace Tan played Susan Boyle with an equally mesmerizing rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream”

At the end, it was James & Co (his wife Regina & son Jayraj) who won the Toastmasters Got Talent contest. Congratulations PP James!

The meeting concluded with everyone singing to the ever-touching albeit a newer version of “We are the World”. It was certainly a memorable nite for all.

The second day saw all of us gallivanting the nook and corner of Jonker Street. The objective – to exploit our tastebuds to the fullest and fill our bottomless stomach with everything famous ranging from Baba Cendol, Laksa Mee, Assam Laksa, Assam Fish, Chicken Rice Ball to Pineapple Tarts! Oh, also not forgetting all the cute little collectibles bargained from the flea market.

With weary legs and bag-loads of takeaways, everyone hurried back to their hotel rooms to check out and later bade adieu to this famously charming city of everything old. By late afternoon, we were back to our own abodes in KL.

Club Officer Installation on 06 Jul 2010

Report by Tom Chen

Photos by Chor Chee Hoe

FTMC CLUB OFFICER INSTALLATION 2010

July 6th Friendship Toastmasters’ night was a special night, for it was that time of the year where club members meet, to explicitly show their appreciation to its current Exco members at the end of the term, and to welcome and install the newly elected Exco members.

Over 40 members and guests attended to celebrate two segments of the evening:-

- The official thanking of its prior EXCO and the installation of newly elected EXCO;

- The enjoying of an evening of fun and games;

The Installation Segment

Tom Chen, the Master of Ceremony for the evening set everyone in the mood, with a brief de-stressing and a visualization exercise. Then our immediate past Area Governor, Tan Lay Theng conducted the Installation Ceremony – thanking the current EXCO and installing the newly elected EXCO. They are:-

President Zaiton Zainal Abidin
Vice President Education Angeline Lee
Vice President Membership Chor Chee Hoe
Vice President Public Relations Alexandra Lau
Club Secretary Vincent Wong
Treasurer Chor Wai Yee
Sergeant-at-arms M Sivadass

Each member took their oath seriously and proudly to the applause of the entire audience.

President Zaiton taking her oath

Following the swearing and installation ceremony, the newly installed President, Zaiton made her maiden speech. She spoke about her journey and transformation over the last 3 years, acknowledging that she had improved significantly and has come a long way. She also asked members to do their best whether in their speaking or leadership role so that they will also achieve their own greatness. When everyone does their best, the club will also achieve its President’s Distinguished Club goals.

The Evening of Fun and Games

Instead of the usual prepared speeches and table topics; games, jokes and FTMC Idol programs was included for attendees to catch up with one another, to get to know each other better and just to enjoy the evening.

Our audience in laughter and enjoying the evening

The program included:

Singing - the FTMC theme song “Eagle” by ABBA.
Led by Grace Tan.

Games - Act it out (Communicating with your body)
Led by Grace Tan: Tongue Twister (Pronunciation skills)
Led by Daniel Teh: Listening and Communicating Skills

Lucky Dip Table Topics - Each lucky draw participant was given a gift for speaking on their feet.
Led by Vincent Wong

FTMC IDOL 2010 - Best dressed Male and Female categories
Led by Ben Fong

Lucky Draw - Numerous prizes were given.

The Event Details:

The fun began with everyone singing the FTME theme song “Eagle” (by Abba) led by our gracious, beautiful and multi-talented Grace Tan. Before the singing, Tom Chen relayed the origin of how FTMC adopted the “Eagle” song as the theme song. This was followed by the games segment. Grace started this segment with the following games:

1. So you think you can act – five volunteers came up and had to act out a story narrated by Grace. They were Richard, Tony, Nathan, Khoo Nee Wern and Victor.
The winner was the very expressive and talented Richard.

2. Psst, Pass and Piss – five volunteers came up and one had to communicate a procedure to another individual (with others waiting outside the room). As suspected when the procedure was finally communicated by the last volunteer, it had little semblance to the original procedure described by Daniel Teh. The participants were Tommy, Ling Keat, Freddie, Khairil and Katherine. The winner was Leng Keat.

3. Hey, Let’s Twist Again – tongue twisters with 5 volunteers. They were Jess, Winnie, Shamim, Rosalyn and James. It was an exercise of reading aloud a text that totally twisted one’s tongue. The winner was Shamim.

Our five volunteers being briefed by Daniel on the rules of the game

This was followed by Table Topics, where Vincent Wong conducted the Lucky Dip Table Topics. Each participant drawn took an item from his bag and talk about it. Zaiton had a green pillow, Angeline a soccer ball, Lorna a Detox book, Ling Keat a book on Miracle Food and finally Wai Yee with Sun Tzu “The Art of War” book. Everyone spoke eloquently and was awarded the item they picked. The attendees also picked Lorna and Ling Keat as best speakers.

The FTMC idol – male and female category for the best dressed in purple followed, and was conducted by Ben Fong. Three candidates were selected in each category. For the male category - Richard, Vincent and James were selected. Richard with his cowboy hat and effervescent personality won. For the female category, Grace, Rosalyn and Eunice were selected. Grace Tan, with her sexy purple dress and moves, won this category.

Then we had lucky draw with the gifts donated by Ben, Grace, Freddie, Vincent and Zaiton.

Finally, Zaiton gave the closing address thanking everyone for coming and participating in this event. However before signing off, Tan Lay Theng came up and gave the award for the Toastmaster of the Year, recognized for her dedication and hard work. The award was given to Angeline Lee.

It was a long and fun evening.

Final thanks to Ben Fong and his team for organizing this very successful event and all the participants for attending and taking part in the activities. We wish the newly elected committee a successful year ahead.
