Subject: FTMC Meeting on 20 April 2010

Dear members,

Our meeting will be just a week away and the theme of the meeting is Be the Change

Almost everyone has ideas about how to change the world. We all want it to be a better place even if we differ about how to bring about the change. Sometimes we rail against the government or against large corporations about their policies. We might get extremely angry about all the injustice in the world.

If we want to change the world or the organization that we are in, maybe we need to change ourselves first. Perhaps we might consider the possibility that everything that comes into our lives, both good and bad, is a reflection, a mirror in which to see ourselves.

This may sound a bit strange but it can be very profound as we look into ourselves more deeply.

Our meeting next week will be extra special as all our past Presidents will be there to grace the meeting. So do come and know these individuals who had helped Friendship to get many awards for the club including the prestigious President's Distinguished Club Award.

Warmest regards.

Be Open To Possibilities

Our Toastmaster of the Evening, Past President KC Lim, motivated us to aim for excellence with this reminder: Excellence is a positive habit, a positive culture.

It was indeed an excellent evening, as we listened to two prepared speeches from Kent Ho and Alexandra Lau.

Although it was only Kent’s second speech, he dazzled us with his excellence in incorporating material from “Inspire the Audience” - Project No. 10 in our Competent Communication Manual.

Kent inspired us with the story of Blake Mycoskie who vowed to donate a pair of shoes to the children of Argentina for every pair of shoes that he sold. Although Blake was criticized, he persevered with his dream and has to date, donated one million pair of shoes. Kent then put in an emotional appeal to us to do a small act of kindness, everyday.

In “The Pianist in the Mall”, Alexandra told the touching story of a pianist who gave his best regardless of how much he was paid or how many people were listening to his recital. The pianist played as if he was playing at an opera house. He was playing in his paradise and God was in his soul, and in his hands.

We had a number of guests who attended our “Be Open to Possibilities” evening. Among them was VPPR Patrick Lim from Klang Bilingual Toastmasters Club who was Kent’s evaluator.

All the way from Cyberjaya Toastmasters Club was President Tejinder Singh who played the role of Table Topics Evaluator.

Towards the end of our “Be Open to Possibilities” meeting, a number of awards were presented:

Best Table Topics Speaker – Angeline Lee
CL pin – Angeline Lee
ALB pin – Tan Lay Theng
Outstanding President – Tan Lay Theng

It was an emotional moment for SKL Walia, DTM, as she presented the Outstanding President award to our IPP Tan Lay Theng. She praised Lay Theng for her high standards of integrity and diligence. Under her excellent guidance and leadership, Friendship Toastmasters Club achieved President’s Distinguished Club status.

Two days after our 6 April meeting, we were at Tiffani Kiara to watch our Club Contest champions delivering their award-winning performances at our Area W7 International Speech Contest and Table Topics Contest.

Congratulations to Freddie Yap and Tom Chen! FTMC is very proud of their excellent performances. Both won an award each.

Dear members,

It has been quite a while since I have kept in touch with you all. I have missed our contests and there are 5 weeks in March so the break is more than the normal 2 weeks. I hope that all is well in your life.

Congratulations to the winners of the International Speech and Table Topics Contest; Freddie, Tom, Khairul and Tom, Gino,Freddie. I am sure you had great fun and good experience. I hope that you will carry through the winning streak to the next and the next level.

The theme of our next meeting is "Be Open to Possibility". When we stay open to possibilities, we open a space in our lives to draw the people, places and things we need to fulfill our desires and our purpose in life.

I, for one, believe that part of being open to possibility is to listen to your intuition. No one knows you as well as YOU, the subconscious mind. TRUST and be happy in your decision, even if others may deter you with their reasoning and logical explanations.

Is intuition a thought or a sensation in your body? Are you facing a tough decision now?
What is that small voice inside you telling you about it?
Does one choice make you feel comfortable and at ease in your body?
Does the other make you contract?
Pay attention to your body's wisdom, your Inner self, your Higher Self

So, L & G, I as the Grammarian for the next meeting have chosen INTUITION as the WOD for our next meeting.

Warmest regards.

International Speech & Table Topics Contest - 16 March 2010

by Angeline Lee and Elaine Tan

Elaine Tan

The air was cold and slightly more invigorating than usual. It may have turned a few of Friendship Toastmasters Club (FTMC) International Speech & Table Topics (ISTT) contestants’ hands cold. Fortunately, they did not experience cold feet. Some were anxiously doing last minute revisions while the seasoned contestants were exploring the new stage arrangement and happily grabbing a quick bite. A mixture of gamely first-timers and experienced contest speakers had their few minutes of limelight and fame before anonymous judges and a sea of new faces.

Audience at our ISTT Contest on 16 March 2010

Decked in royal blue and silver, elegant Kim Chow charmed the audience and calmed the contestants’ nerves while President-cum-Contest Organising Chair Ben Fong welcomed everyone present. The International Speech Contest saw Tom Chen, Freddie Yap, Sivadass, Khairul Hassan and Elaine Tan attempting to win the hearts of the audience within the allocated time of 5 to 7 minutes for each speaker.

Tom asked why should we have regrets, punish ourselves and lose sleep in “Life Regrets – It’s a Choice”. Even if things don’t work out at times, we have made the best possible decision at that moment in time. We have a choice – either to blame ourselves or move forward.

Storytelling maestro Freddie narrated a few crime scenarios in “Crime? What Crime?” His hilarious solution to reducing crime rate includes behaving like a nerd as criminals would then try to avoid you. He also advocated budgeting for potential losses. A robbery would then be less painful for you as you have budgeted for this event.

Sharing his life story in “Unchangeable Change”, Sivadass said Malaysia has changed since Merdeka and so had he since becoming a Toastmasters member. He had the audience in stitches when he shared an anecdote of the person who introduced him to Toastmasters.

“The Gruelling Desire” had Khairul describing her experience at the Standard Chartered Marathon held in Singapore on 6 Dec 2009. In the beginning, she was surrounded by 30,000 runners at 5 AM in the morning. Towards the end she had to remind herself - Pain is temporary, glory is forever !

In “Heart & Seoul”, Elaine gave an imagery tour of her next holiday destination – Seoul. Her tale encompasses the freezing temperature of winter, staying warm at soothing saunas, savouring authentic and exotic Korean dishes, and witnessing creative masterpieces at the Seoul Design Olympiad.

When it came to the Table Topics Contest, competitors were ushered out of the room and only allowed in one at a time as the same question was read out: “What is the best investment that you have ever made?”

With all the knowledge out there, learning and self-growth were the best investments for Tom as one can lose in the stock market and in relationship.

The topic was delightful for Kent who selected friends as they can enrich the mind, relationship and add value towards a meaningful life.

Going back to his primary school days, Freddie attributed his love for reading to a headmaster who read storybooks to his students. His investment in reading is now reaping benefits at his office and at our Toastmasters meetings.

Gino linked investment to wealth, wisdom, knowledge and health. Health is important as without it, we won’t be able to enjoy all the money that we have.

On the other hand, Toastmasters was at the top of Sivadass’ mind as it propelled him to become a better speaker. He encouraged the audience to continue investing in themselves, by attending Toastmasters meetings.

While waiting for the Chief Judge to tabulate the results, Kim Chow interviewed the speakers on their colourful backgrounds.

With the help of LGM-P DTM Francis Ng, mementos were presented to Chief Judge Hadzrin Shah, while tokens of appreciation were awarded to the panel of role players consisting of Mohd Yusof Ismail Fahmy from Speakers’ Dream Club, Ng Ying Ling and Muhammad Dazlyreza Jamaluddin from Ambank Club, and our very own Chor Wai Yee and Tan Lay Theng.
