After a short break, we then moved on to the Project Speech Session. In her “From Good to Great” speech, Past President Lay Theng recalled Division W Governor 2009/2010 DTM Soh Fong Wai’s analogy for a Toastmasters leadership journey. He said, “When you join the club, it is like learning how to swim in a safe and small swimming pool, and you swim with the friends from your club whom you are familiar with. When you become the Area Governor, you go to the public swimming pool of Olympic size and you will face different challenges. This is the training ground for you to prepare yourself, so that you can one day go to the ocean.”
She also recounted a thought-provoking idea that she learnt from Jim Collin, the author of the book “Good To Great”. Jim Collin said, "Good is the enemy of Great. We don’t have great schools, principally because we have good schools. Few people attain great lives, in large part because it is just so easy to settle for a good life.” Lay Theng then asked us whether we wanted to be good or great. We agreed with her whole-heartedly that being great is better than being good.
As the second speaker, I presented my “A Brief History of Time” speech for the Speaking To Inform manual. I shared about my Lee family blog and demonstrated the few simple steps required to create a blog and to do the first posting. To my surprise, at the end of the meeting, Teresa and Lay Theng both informed me they were also interested in starting up their own blog.
Phileo, performing Timer duties for the first time, reported that we were on time for most of the items in the program agenda.
